Memory Foam
Depth Range: 10cm - 20cm
Memory foam mattresses have gained popularity over the years due to their unique properties and numerous benefits. Here are some of the advantages of using a memory foam mattress:
- Pressure Relief: Memory foam mattresses are known for their excellent pressure-relieving properties. They contour to the shape of your body, distributing your weight evenly, alleviating pressure points providing a more restful nights sleep.
- Spinal Alignment: By supporting the natural curvature of the spine, memory foam mattresses provide proper spinal alignment which can help reduce aches and pains.
- Motion Isolation: Memory foam absorbs movement, making it an excellent choice for couples or anyone who shares a bed. When one person moves or gets in and out of bed, the other person is less likely to be disturbed, ensuring a more peaceful night's sleep.
- Allergen Resistance: High-density memory foam is inherently resistant to common allergens like dust mites and mold. This can be a significant benefit for people with allergies or asthma.
- Durability: Our high quality memory foam mattresses are known for their durability and longevity. They can last for many years with proper care, making them a wise investment in the long run.
- Low Maintenance: Foam mattresses typically require minimal maintenance. They are less prone to sagging, and you don't need to flip them regularly like traditional mattresses.
- Minimal Noise: Memory foam mattresses are typically silent, meaning they won’t squeak or creak when you move in bed, ensuring a quieter sleeping experience.
Cool Foam
Depth Range: 10cm - 25cm
Cool foam mattresses offer several benefits that can enhance your sleep quality and overall comfort. These benefits include the ability to regulate body temperature and provide a comfortable sleeping experience. Here are some of the key advantages of cool foam mattresses:
- Temperature Regulation: Cool foam mattresses are designed to dissipate heat and regulate your body temperature as you sleep. They often incorporate cooling gel-infused foam or open-cell foam technology to help prevent overheating during the night, which can be especially beneficial for hot sleepers.
- Enhanced Comfort: The conforming nature of foam mattresses allows them to contour to your body, relieving pressure points and providing excellent support. This can result in reduced discomfort, decreased tossing and turning, and improved sleep quality.
- Motion Isolation: Foam mattresses absorb movement, making it an excellent choice for couples or anyone who shares a bed. When one person moves or gets in and out of bed, the other person is less likely to be disturbed, ensuring a more peaceful night's sleep.
- Pain Relief: The supportive nature of foam mattresses can alleviate back pain, joint pain, and muscle discomfort. They help distribute your body weight evenly, which can reduce the pressure on sensitive areas and promote better spinal alignment.
- Durability: High-quality foam mattresses are known for their durability. They tend to hold up well over time, maintaining their shape and support, which can extend the lifespan of your mattress.
- Allergy-Friendly: Foam mattresses are less likely to harbor dust mites and allergens compared to traditional innerspring mattresses. This can be beneficial for individuals with allergies or asthma.
- Low Maintenance: Foam mattresses typically require minimal maintenance. They are less prone to sagging, and you don't need to flip them regularly like traditional mattresses.
- Minimal Noise: Memory foam mattresses are typically silent, meaning they won't squeak or creak when you move in bed, ensuring a quieter sleeping experience.
- Improved Sleep Quality: The combination of temperature regulation, pressure point relief, and motion isolation can contribute to an overall improvement in sleep quality, leaving you feeling more refreshed and energised in the morning.
Gel Foam
Depth Range: 10cm - 25cm
Gel foam mattresses, also known as gel memory foam mattresses, have gained popularity in recent years due to their unique combination of support and comfort.
These mattresses are constructed using a gel-infused memory foam layer and they offer several benefits:
- Pressure Relief: Gel foam mattresses conform to the shape of your body, distributing your weight evenly. This helps to relieve pressure points, reduce discomfort, and alleviate issues like joint pain and muscle tension.
- Enhanced Comfort: The gel infusion in these mattresses helps regulate temperature and prevents excessive heat retention, making them cooler to sleep on compared to traditional memory foam mattresses. This cooling effect can improve overall sleep comfort, especially for hot sleepers.
- Motion Isolation: Gel foam mattresses excel at isolating motion. If you share your bed with a partner who tosses and turns or gets in and out of bed frequently, you're less likely to be disturbed by their movements, leading to a more restful night's sleep.
- Supportive: Gel foam mattresses offer excellent support, ensuring proper alignment of the spine. This can help alleviate back pain and improve sleep quality for those with chronic pain issues.
- Durability: Gel foam mattresses are typically more durable than traditional memory foam mattresses. The gel infusion helps maintain the integrity of the foam over time, preventing sagging and wear.
- Allergen Resistance: Many gel foam mattresses are hypoallergenic and resistant to common allergens like dust mites and mold. This can be beneficial for individuals with allergies or respiratory conditions.
- Motion Transfer Reduction: Gel foam's ability to absorb and isolate motion means that even if your partner moves around in bed, you're less likely to feel it, resulting in undisturbed sleep.
- Minimal Off-Gassing: While all memory foam mattresses may initially have a slight chemical odor (off-gassing), gel foam mattresses tend to have less noticeable off-gassing compared to traditional memory foam mattresses.
No Comfort Layer/Reflex
Depth Range: 6cm - 15cm
Reflex foam mattresses, also known as high-density foam mattresses or orthopedic foam mattresses, offer several benefits that can make them a popular choice for individuals seeking a comfortable and supportive sleep surface. Here are some of the key benefits of reflex foam mattresses:
- Pressure Relief: Reflex foam mattresses conform to the shape of your body, distributing your weight evenly. This helps to relieve pressure points, reduce discomfort, and alleviate issues like joint pain and muscle tension.
- Supportive: Reflex foam mattresses provide excellent support for your spine and other pressure-sensitive areas. The high-density foam maintains its shape with superb bounce back ability, offering consistent support throughout the night.
- Motion Isolation: Reflex foam absorbs movement, making it an excellent choice for couples or anyone who shares a bed. When one person moves or gets in and out of bed, the other person is less likely to be disturbed, ensuring a more peaceful night’s sleep.
- Durability: Reflex foam mattresses are known for their durability. They can withstand regular use for an extended period without significant sagging or loss of support, which can be common in some other mattress types.
- Allergy-Friendly: Foam mattresses are less likely to harbor dust mites and allergens compared to traditional innerspring mattresses. This can be beneficial for individuals with allergies or asthma.
- Temperature Regulation: Reflex foam mattresses tend to sleep cooler than memory foam mattresses, as they have an open-cell structure that allows for better air circulation. This can help prevent overheating during the night.
- Minimal Noise: These mattresses are virtually silent, which means they won't make noise when you move or shift positions, unlike some spring or coil mattresses.
- Easy Maintenance: These mattresses are relatively low-maintenance. They don't require flipping or rotating, and they are often designed with removable, washable covers for easy cleaning.
- Affordability: Reflex foam mattresses tend to be more budget-friendly compared to some other mattress types, such as latex or hybrid mattresses, making them accessible to a wide range of consumers
Welcome to our comprehensive mattress size guide, designed to help you find the perfect fit for your bed. Whether you're upgrading your mattress or selecting a new one, understanding mattress sizing is crucial for ensuring comfort and a seamless fit in your bedroom. This mattress sizing guide provides you with essential information on bed dimensions in the UK, making it easier to choose the right mattress for your space or create a bespoke mattress using our builder.
When selecting a mattress, it’s important to measure your existing mattress or bed frame to guarantee the best fit. Our guide will walk you through the steps of measuring your mattress and offer advice on selecting the appropriate thickness to match your needs. With our clear and concise mattress size guide, you'll be well-equipped to make an informed decision, ensuring a comfortable and restful night's sleep every time.
How do I measure my new mattress?
To get the most accurate measurement, we recommend measuring your existing mattress in order to make sure that your new mattress will fit snugly into the space. If this is not possible, measure the bed frame or base surface but please make note of the below when doing so!
If your mattress is placed on a base without any surrounding structure, it's important to measure the full dimensions of the base to ensure that the mattress adequately covers all sides of the bed.
If your mattress is situated within a bed frame or nestled between two walls, it is advisable to ensure a modest 1cm gap on either side. This slight allowance will provide ample space for tucking in your bed sheets.
What thickness is right for me?
If you have no restrictions on the height your mattress can be, then the thicker the better. With our 25cm models, we use a deeper layer of the comfort foam to add to the luxury with more supportive foam underneath so your mattress supports you, for longer!
Choosing the right mattress thickness is crucial for comfort and support. The ideal thickness depends on several factors, including your body weight, sleeping position, and personal preference.
For a Plush Feel: If you prefer a plush, luxurious feel, a thicker mattress, around 25cm or more, is ideal. Thicker mattresses generally have additional layers of comfort foam, providing extra cushioning and support, which is perfect if you enjoy sinking into your mattress slightly.
For a Firmer Feel: If you prefer a firmer sleeping surface or have height restrictions, a thinner mattress, such as a 14cm option, may be more suitable. Thinner mattresses can still offer excellent support, especially when made with high-density foams like our Reflex foam, which maintains firmness while providing adequate pressure relief.
For Specific Needs: If you have specific requirements, such as limited space or the need for easy manoeuvrability, thinner mattresses are a great option. They’re also ideal for bunk beds, trundles, or beds with adjustable bases.
The right thickness can significantly impact your sleep quality, ensuring you wake up refreshed and well-supported. At Custom Mattress, we offer a range of thickness options and mattress toppers, allowing you to choose the perfect balance of comfort and support for your individual needs.
What about if I am restricted in the height I can have?
If you do require a thinner mattress, we can make our Reflex model with no comfort layer to 6cm deep. Please see our thickness recommendations below:
14cm or less: Upgrade to a firm feel for improved support and firmness (Upgrading is free of charge!)

Cool | 10cm | 25cm |
No Comfort Mattress | 6cm | 15cm |
Bed Dimensions UK
Understanding bed dimensions is essential when selecting the right mattress size for your space. In the UK, standard bed sizes range from compact options like Single beds to more spacious choices like King and Super King beds. Here’s a quick overview of the most common bed dimensions in the UK:
- Single: 90cm x 190cm (3' x 6'3") – Ideal for children, teenagers, or smaller guest rooms.
- Double: 135cm x 190cm (4'6" x 6'3") – A versatile size that works well for solo sleepers who enjoy extra space or for couples in smaller bedrooms.
- King: 150cm x 200cm (5' x 6'6") – Offers more width and length, providing ample room for couples or taller individuals.
- Super King: 180cm x 200cm (6' x 6'6") – The ultimate in luxury and space, perfect for couples who want maximum comfort.
When choosing a mattress, it’s important to match it to your bed’s dimensions to ensure a snug fit. For custom or non-standard sizes, our bespoke mattress builder allows you to create a mattress that fits your specific bed frame, ensuring comfort without compromise.
The Importance of Getting the Right Size Mattress
The size of your mattress plays a significant role in the quality of your sleep. A mattress that is too small can lead to discomfort, frequent waking, and restricted movement, especially if you're sharing the bed. For couples, a larger mattress like a King or Super King offers more personal space, reducing disturbances caused by movement during the night. If you tend to spread out while sleeping or share your bed with pets or children, opting for a larger mattress can make a noticeable difference in how well-rested you feel each morning. The right mattress size allows you to sleep more comfortably, providing the space needed to move freely and maintain a healthy sleep posture.
