Our Topper Comfort Layer Options:
At Custom Mattress, we understand that one size does not fit all. This is why we are pleased to offer a range of mattress topper comfort layers to suit your unique sleep needs.
No Comfort Layer (Reflex Foam):
If you prefer a firmer sleep surface, our no-comfort layer option uses reflex foam as the base material. Reflex foam quickly springs back and supports your body, similar to traditional springs but without the soft feel of added comfort layers. It offers good support and adapts to your shape, though adding a comfort layer on top creates a softer, more luxurious sleep experience.
Ideal for:
- No-nonsense sleepers.
Memory Foam:
Memory foam, first developed by NASA, contours to your body for personalised support and pressure relief. This material reacts to heat and pressure, shaping itself to your body and evenly distributing weight. It's great for people with chronic pain or those looking for extra comfort, as it reduces pressure on areas like the shoulders, hips, and back. It also limits motion transfer, making it ideal for couples.
Ideal for:
- Sleepers who suffer from back pain.
- Couples looking for minimal motion transfer.
Gel Foam:
Gel foam offers the body-hugging benefits of memory foam but with a cooler feel. It’s infused with cooling gels and has a firmer feel and faster rebound, like latex. This foam provides responsive support while helping to dissipate heat, making it a great choice for hot sleepers who want both comfort and support.
Ideal for:
- Those looking for a cool and comfortable sleep.
Cool Foam:
Cool foam combines the softness of memory foam with better breathability. It uses open-cell technology or cooling agents to regulate temperature throughout the night, making it our coolest comfort layer. This option is perfect for those who tend to overheat or want a fresher sleep experience without losing the contouring benefits of memory foam.
Ideal for:
- People who overheat in the night.

How do I measure my new mattress Topper?
For the getting the most accurate measurement, we recommend measuring your existing mattress in order to make sure that your new mattress topper will fit snugly into the space. If this is not possible, measure the bed frame or base surface but please make note of the below when doing so!
If your mattress is placed on a base without any surrounding structure, it's important to measure the full dimensions of the base to ensure that the mattress topper adequately covers all sides of the bed.
If your mattress is situated within a bed frame or nestled between two walls, it is advisable to ensure a modest 1cm gap on either side. This slight allowance will provide ample space for tucking in your bed sheets.
What thickness is right for me?
If you have no restrictions on the height your mattress can be, then the thicker the better. With our 10cm models, we use a deeper layer of the comfort foam to add to the luxury with more supportive foam underneath so your mattress supports you, for longer!
What about if I am restricted in the height I can have?
If you do require a thinner mattress topper, we can make our Reflex model with no comfort layer to 10cm deep. Please see our thickness recommendations below:
5cm or less: Upgrade to a firm feel for improved support and firmness (Upgrading is free of charge!)
Mattress Topper Depth Ranges
The cost of the comfort layer will depend on the actual depth of your mattress:
Comfort Layer Type | Min Depth | Max Depth |
---|---|---|
Memory | 2.5cm | 10cm |
Gel | 5cm | 10cm |
Cool | 5cm | 10cm |
